location
Fossgate. It takes its name from the small River Foss that passes under the stone bridge at the end of the street. The street has a tradition of food going back to medieval times, as it was home to a seafood market, which would open rather like the New York Stock Exchange on the tolling of what was known as the Scatybell, from the nearby St Mary’s Chapel.
Today, the tradition of quality food continues in the form of some of the best restaurants and bars in York.
